How to Make a Scavenger Hunt With QR Codes

updated November 08, 2011

QR codes are similar to bar codes in that they contain data in a scanable graphic. These codes are scanned by specialized readers that are often equipped on smartphones. Once scanned, the user is redirected to a website that was encoded within the graphic. QR codes are being used in a variety of creative ways and are easily incorporated in activities such as scavenger hunts.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Printer
  • Smart phones with QR code readers (needed by participants)
    • 1

Plan your clues and locations. You must know where you will be sending hunters and what clues you will use to lead them there. Clues should be easily understood but require some thinking or research to solve. You must also determine the scavenger hunt's rules and what prize(s) will be given.

    • 2

Create a website with a separate page for each clue. There are quite a few hosting providers who allow you to create and host simple websites for free. Do some research and find the option that best suites your needs. Remember that each clue must have its own page to have a unique QR code. Add images to the clue pages to make them more visually appealing. If you want to get advanced, you can even add video or audio clues to the pages. Remember to keep the clues fun and interesting to enhance the experience for participants. Also, ensure that you disable any navigational menus on the site to make it impossible for participants to navigate to another clue page without scanning the appropriate code.

    • 3

Shorten the URL of each page using an online URL shortener. Then use the shortened URLs to create the appropriate QR codes using a QR code generator. Many URL shorteners also have the ability to create QR codes. Again, many free options are available. Do research and choose the one that best fits your needs.

    • 4

Print the QR codes and use a QR scanner to make sure each one works. When scanned, the QR code should direct you to the appropriate clue page. This is a good time to ensure it's not possible to navigate to other clue pages within the site.

    • 5

Place the QR codes in the appropriate locations. Depending on your participants, you may not want the QR codes to be highly visible. Double-check your codes as you place them to be certain they are being placed in the correct order, at the correct locations.

Provide the scavenger hunt participants with the rules, prize info and first clue, and let the hunt begin.
